Process of a Dental Exam

Depending on your concerns, your dental exam and cleaning will vary. Generally, your dentist and hygienist will incorporate these steps in your dental cleaning:

You're in expert hands: Dr. Smith was an assistant professor at The Medical University of South Carolina.
You're in expert hands: Dr. Smith was an assistant professor at The Medical University of South Carolina.

Medical History Review

We'll ask for your medical history to review before your cleaning. This information gives us an idea of any medical conditions in the past or present that may affect your oral health.

Dental History Review

If it's your first visit to our dental practice, we'll look over your dental history to see what oral health problems and procedures you've had in the past. The dentist will ask if you have any current concerns about your oral health.

X-Rays

If you need up-to-date X-rays of your teeth and mouth, we will perform them at this time. X-rays help give us a clear picture of your teeth, gums, and other mouth structures.

Dental Cleaning

Your dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth with state-of-the-art technology. We focus on removing built-up plaque and tartar that cannot be removed from flossing and brushing alone.

Exam of Teeth and Gums

Our dentist, Dr. Brock Smith, will examine your teeth for signs of decay, cavities, gum disease, or other concerns. He may use tools to check for sensitivity that could indicate a problem.

Fluoride Treatment

We may suggest fluoride treatment to prevent tooth decay. It's as simple as swishing with mouthwash, but can provide your teeth with an extra layer of defense.

Treatment Plan

If you have any problems that need treatment, such as cavities or gum disease, Dr. Smith can set up a treatment plan and schedule follow-up appointments.

You'll leave our Charleston office with a cleaner smile, a plan for your oral health, and tips to improve your oral hygiene practice.
