Dental Crowns

A missing tooth, a broken tooth, and a tooth with deep dental stains have a common solution: a dental crown.

This versatile treatment can improve the functionality of a tooth and transform the appearance of your smile.

Smith Custom Dentistry in Charleston, SC, works with an award-winning lab to create durable and lifelike dental crowns.

Have a Broken Tooth? We Handle Dental Emergencies

A broken tooth can impair your ability to eat and speak properly, in addition to being painful. Fortunately, our dentist has what it takes to repair broken teeth quickly and put you back on track to optimal oral health.

Dental Crowns Can Transform Your Smile

Our dental crowns are made from ceramic, zirconia, and high-strength IPS e.max®, a premium porcelain. When we use these materials, the result is a crown that is durable and virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. Porcelain crowns can transform your smile by:

Protecting a Tooth

Damaged and decayed teeth impact your overall oral health and function. Our dentist can remove the damaged and decayed tissue and cap your tooth with a dental crown to reinforce its structure and restore its function. Crowns can also be used to protect a tooth after a root canal.

Replacing Missing Teeth

Implant-supported crowns can replace a tooth from root to crown and stop the jawbone atrophy that occurs after tooth loss. Our dentist can place dental implants and create your implant-supported crown all in one location, so you don't need a referral to any specialists.

Concealing Imperfections

Though crowns are typically used in restorative dentistry to repair and replace teeth, they can be used for cosmetic purposes, as well. Our dentist can use a dental crown to cap a misshapen tooth or a tooth that has deep dental stains and is affecting the appearance of your smile. A cosmetic crown could be what you need to achieve the bright, symmetrical smile you desire.

Consultation

Dr. Smith will meet with you to determine if a dental crown is the right solution for your needs. During this appointment, he will examine your teeth and inquire about your goals.

Preparatory Work

Before you can receive a crown, you must be in good overall health. Issues like tooth decay, gum disease, and root canal infections must be addressed first. If you're receiving a traditional crown, our dentist will shape your tooth to accommodate the crown. If you're receiving an implant-supported crown, dental implants will have to be placed first.

Impressions

Our dentist will take impressions of your teeth and gums to aid in the fabrication of your custom crown.

Temporary Crown

You will be provided with a temporary crown so you don't have to go another day without restored function.

Dental Lab

Your impressions will be sent to a dental lab where technicians will create your crown from ceramic, zirconia, or porcelain. The lab we use has been voted lab of the year by the National Association of Dental Laboratories.

Permanent Crown

In two weeks or less, your permanent crown will be sent to our office. You can return to our Charleston office so we can remove your temporary crown, check the fit of your permanent crown, and bond it in place.
